    Music of the Baroque: The Chevalier

    The Chevalier is a new concert drama with symphonic music about the first major Black classical composer, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Audiences discover his true friendships with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Marie Antoinette, and his unknown contribution to the abolishment of slavery.

     

     

    Music of the Baroque: McGill Plays Mozart
    Sunday, February 27, 2022 at 7:30pm

    Mozart scholar Dame Jane Glover joins forces with Chicago native and New York Philharmonic principal clarinet Anthony McGill for Mozart’s gorgeous Clarinet Concerto. Mozart’s haunting Symphony No. 40 in G Minor and Overture to Lucio Silla, written when he was just 15 years old, complete the program.

     

     

    An Evening wtih Keb’ Mo’

    The bluesman Keb’ Mo’s first self-titled release celebrated a 25th Anniversary in 2019.  Keb’ has proven he is a musical force that defies typical genre labels. Over the course of fourteen albums, he has garnered five Grammy awards, including his most recent 2019 release, Oklahoma, which won in the Best Americana Album category.

    Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author and awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day.

    An educationally entertaining theatrical symphony concert unveiling the musical genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to children and their families. Mozart’s music is magically woven into the drama as two actors recreate historical incidents from the composer’s life. Presenting history, drama, music and fun, this engaging concert is an ideal addition to any children’s music education. Approximately 50 minutes in length and recommended for audiences ages six and up.

     

     

    Music of the Baroque: Easter Oratorio
    Sunday, April 10, 2022 at 7:30pm

    Dame Jane Glover leads the Music of the Baroque Chorus, Orchestra, and four world renowned soloists—Yulia Van Doren, Elizabeth DeShong, James Gilchrist, and Michael Sumuel—in Bach’s imaginative Easter Oratorio, a journey from a cavern’s darkness into the magnificent light of heaven. Gilchrist takes a solo turn in Bach’s only surviving cantata for tenor, “I, wretched man.” The motet “Komm, Jesu, komm” and the thrilling Sinfonia in D Major—possibly a fragment of a lost violin concerto—complete this all-Bach spring extravaganza.

     

     

    Music of the Baroque: Brothers Haydn

    The musical brothers Haydn were no strangers to sibling rivalry. Joseph traveled in fancy musical circles in Esterházy; Michael set up shop in Salzburg where he became friendly with the Mozart family. Decide for yourself who was better as Dame Jane Glover leads a celebration of each man’s unique artistry. Featured works include Michael Haydn’s Symphony No. 26—until 1907, believed to be by Mozart—and Joseph Haydn’s Creation Mass, declared by one of his contemporaries, “the greatest work of a very great man.”
