    Jerry Harrison

I was born on February 21, 1949, in Milwaukee. My mother and grandmother were talented painters and my father had been a musician, performing in jazz groups to help pay for his college expenses. The arts were an important part of our family. I began playing the piano and then added the saxophone in elementary school. Milwaukee had a very active “band scene” in the sixties as high schools had weekly dances, my band was actively involved. (Interestingly two of the members of that band went on to professional careers: Bob Metzger was Leonard Cohen’s guitar player for twenty-five years and Jon Paris was Johnnie Winter’s bass player for ten.)

I continued playing in bands while attending Harvard, but never thought that music would be my career until Jonathan Richman walked into my apartment with the Cambridge contingent of Andy Warhol “Superstars.” I included Jonathan in a documentary film I was making for a class, with his music as a soundtrack as well. As I listened to the music while making the film, I realized how unique and interesting his approach was and then Jonathan asked both my roommate, Ernie Brooks, and me to join the band. The Modern Lovers began attracting interest from all the major record companies. We made a demo for both Warner Brothers and A&M records in 1972. John Cale of the Velvet Underground produced the majority of the tracks. As it worked out, we never finished a record that we were happy with for Warner Brothers, but our 1972 demos came out on Beserkley Records in 1976. This album anticipated many of the attributes prized by the Punk movement—both The Sex Pistols and Joan Jett covered Road Runner– and has continued to be influential. It also caught the ear of Chris, Tina, and David. We met in the summer of 1976, and played a few test shows in the late summer and fall. Leaving the Graduate School of Design, I joined in January 1977, as rehearsals for Talking Heads ’77 began.

As the Talking Heads progressed, we began to leave spaces for outside projects. I began producing bands and artists and released three solo records. In the nineties production became my primary focus. Among the album and singles I’ve produced are albums for: Crash Test Dummies, Live, The Violent Femmes, The Bodeans, Poi Dog Pondering, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, The Verve Pipe, Rusted Root, O.A.R, The String Cheese Incident, Stroke 9, Josh Joplin, The Von Bondies; singles for: The Foo Fighters, No Doubt, Fine Young Cannibals, and It’s Immaterial; and movies: 10 Days Out, Blues from the Backroads and Take Me to the River.

Moving to San Francisco in 1994 where my wife and I raised our three children, I became involved with the startup community. I have co-founded four companies: Garageband.com, Ophirex, RedCrow, and The Main Stage. I also served on the board of directors for: MicroUnity Engineering, IODA, iLike, and Carbon Gold.
